Adams family so closed up I can't get in

Walking, you see odd stuff. This Museo and Cafe is on a walkway, just down from one of the tortuous staircases that lead you from Cuenca’s Historical District to the Tomebomba river. The first time I tried to visit this curiosity, its front door was closed. The second time the front door was actually open. A sign on the next door inside said to ring a buzzer and admittance was one dollar and fifty cents. I rang, but no one came to let me in. This third visit a tall lean kid opens the front door, says nothing as I am standing on the sidewalk behind him, goes through the interior door and slams it without saying a word. He is too thin to be Pugsly. Sometimes you have to let stuff go. For now, their website is my only entry into their world. Sometimes places are prohibited for good reason. If I enter through these locked and bolted museum doors, I might become one of the exhibits.

Skeletons on the wall Seems like Mexico again

There is a lively street art scene in Cuenca. One can google Cuenca Street Art and find examples I haven’t met yet. At an intersection where traffic moves from the Rio Tomebamba into the Historical District there are two skeletons on an exterior wall of a building cavorting amid a glorious cactus patch. The scene is reminiscent of ” Day of the Dead ” in New Mexico, a yearly Mexican celebration that sees skeletons come out and remind people of their mortality. You can bet the person on the other side of the glass in that anthropology museum, in front of you, didn’t know they were going to be an object of display when they joined the spirit world. These two skeletons look full of life and the inscription above both reads ” Salud a la Vida. ”  On one end of the art work is the artist’s first name signature ,” Juli 2015. ” Just over the top of these skeleton’s grinning heads, in Plaza Otorongo below us, you can see a blown up Santa doll waving at street traffic and strolling tourists. In a weird way, celebrating Santa is as weird as celebrating skeletons. Fantasies and nightmares both come from deep places.

Wedding Pictures A different kind of wedding

These two couples, just married, are getting their wedding photos taken in Parque Calderone. When I first see them they have, with them, a young bearded tenor sax player playing ” Here comes the Bride ” on a street corner. Their little photographer is contorted to get the right angle for his shots, the young women are smiling and laughing. Their new husbands look bemused and eager to please. The entourage crosses the street, the ladies lifting white gowns so they won’t get them dirty, They take more photos by the spot where I witnessed official ceremonies celebrating ex pats, good business prospects, and a new transport system. The last wedding I happened upon was in Montevideo, Uruguay on Sarandi Street. This is just as memorable. Everyone is happy, and, if they stay that way, they will be together when they are old. They are, as a friend once told me, about rapping his knuckles on stones on a square in Russia, ” Marking the Moment. ”

Three odds on an even walk odd things stand out

There are surprises on walks, many of them small, many that will be missed if you are not in the right mind to see them. My first surprise this morning is horses in Calderone Park that kids can ride, pushed by a man. These equines roll easily on park paths. They look well fed, have saddles and reins, and come in all sizes. They appear real till you see their marble eyes and tongues that look like the end of Santa’s sock. Another surprise is on a bridge crossing the Rio Tomebamba. There are three sets of locks, knotted together on a bridge railing. This might have begun as a protest, but, more than likely, a prankster kicked it off with one lock and chain with others jumping on board later. There is a similar, much larger, collection of locks knotted together like this in a Montevideo business district so I know even the zaniest things happen all over the world and I, or you, will not likely come up with something new under the sun.  A third surprise today is street art on walls leading down stairs to the river. Colorful, eccentric, imaginative, even obscene, the shapes, colors, and graffiti are difficult to ignore.  Even though I go looking for odd , I don’t want too much of it. Without a lot of sameness, odd is not very interesting. I speculate that Heaven is the only perfect place only a few are ever going to see. and, even in Heaven there will be a few loose strings and butt cans to be emptied. Even angels have a hard time quitting cigarettes.

Paper Thin Spirits

Cartegena, Columbia is a spirit place even if I hate its heat, humidity, street vendors, and dirty streets. There are spirits in that Old City behind huge locked doors, in notches cut into stone walls that held big guns aimed at pirate ships coming for treasure. Spirits sit on the steps of the Museo of the Inquisition where great battles for souls played out in the fifteen and sixteen hundreds. Cuenca is also a spirit place. On any day, even if you take the same route you did yesterday, there are surprises. There are troubled clouds that mass over the New Cathedral like demons trying to break down iron doors. There are muscled figures out of science fiction movies, chained to a balcony, who look down at you with a scowl. There is a mixture of old world and new world, and, turning any corner, you can not be sure what might spill in front of you, whether you are ready to catch it, or not. Paper figures hang on a wire fence by the Rio Tomebamba and are so fragile they are twisted and torn by forces outside their control. Some say we are paper too, holding tightly to our conventions, with all our strength, so we are not blown into the river and drowned.  Forces for good, and evil, are always blowing us here and there with big gusts of their breath, like we are small sailboats on a big ocean..

Ronald McDonald For President 2016

Ronald doesn’t mind getting photographed. Just five minutes ago, two kids sat next to the icon eating fries and sipping Coca Cola. How is it that a clown can become the most famous person in the world? Ronald’s only resume is red hair, crazy colored clothes, clown shoes, and a continual smile. In a city like this with hundreds of bronze statues of military men, conquerors, artists, writers, and churchmen, how can Ronald be so comfortable with himself? It seems time to run Ronald for President in 2016. We have puppets in office, but electing a puppet, who doesn’t pretend to be something he isn’t, would be the most honest thing we have done in years.

Protest Cuenca, Ecuador,December 4, 2015

When people are shut out from having a say about what happens to them, by those they have elected, protests are inevitable. Some protests move into chaos and violence, some are contained, others are snuffed out like the tip of a burning candle. I make myself invisible, slip away, and don’t get home till late because streets are blocked off, going and coming. Protests seldom lead to solutions, but they create emotions. Governments can be toppled on emotion. No government exists that will give us what we want without taking away what we need.

Break and Enter Belize locked out of Number three unit

Lodgers left and leave the only key where Jack can’t find it. ” I only have one key, ” Jack explains, as he takes a hammer and knocks apart the dead bolt. ” I don’t want to be accused of taking any ones stuff. ” It only takes a few seconds of hammering to knock the dead bolt apart and open the door. The door handle has already been picked. The only difference between breaking and entering, and getting a place ready to rent, is intent. Growing up in the landlord business, with a dad who had more than one property, this is just a small irritation. With a new deadbolt, lock set, and key, the new renters will never know the difference. They will get their only key and everyone will sleep like babies.

Dogs and Birds-Belize Morning walk

Dog lovers often bring their dogs on vacation with them. This little guy runs down the beach and his owners tell us, as we pass them, that he will swim out to get birds all the way to the end of the pier. Down the beach, only moments ago, Rabbit and I met a local woman with a pooper scooper who said she was watching for the dog that poops on her yard each morning. She also tells us, matter of factly, that she has a loaded shotgun and would love to make her day and shoot the dogs owner first.  You Tube is where aliens can go to get a good read on our planet. This little dog needs to be careful about his business. Shotguns can take you all the way out of this life even if the human who pulls the trigger is half blind and drunk as a skunk.

Beach bar vows Wayo's wedding

There are at least two hundred invited guests but anyone can join this wedding.. Wayos is a popular beach bar in San Pedro Town and Wayo, pronounced Y -oh, is a popular owner. When the groom arrives in a black golf cart limo, there is applause and cheers. As always, his bar is open and weather is uncooperative. It rains in spurts and people crowd under tents, roof overhangs, and in the bar to escape another torrential downpour. The wedding ceremony is short and the couple recites handwritten vows under a big tent overlooking the Caribbean Sea.. They promise to honor and cherish and encourage and support each other, and, in front of important people in their life, draw a big heart in the sand with their names inside it. Before, during, and after the ceremony, people re-connect.  It is a close knit group on this Isla Bonita and meeting people is not difficult here. When people come here they cast time and routine out of the boat and lifting anchors that hold them elsewhere. It is a good wedding and a happy time. Nature isn’t co-operating but another lady well wisher, standing next to me, tells me it is good luck to be married on a rainy day. If that is so, this couple will have enough luck to take care of all of us.
